Growing up I didn’t realize I was lactose intolerant, which is weird because all the symptoms and signs were there, like ALL THE TIME! I didn’t know why I would get so bloated and full after eating a salad, hello Ranch Dressing 😬 Or how I could have a cup of ice cream and call it a day for food, for the rest of the day, and don’t get me started on what eating a bowl of cereal with milk did to me 🤦🏻‍♀️ I mention all this because most protein bars have lactose, whey protein, powdered milk, etc…, which made it very difficult for me to find a good high protein bar to use as a meal replacement, I like to eat them in place of breakfast. Mind you, this was 20 years ago, or more, long before being lactose intolerant was trendy so it was much more difficult to find dairy-free pure protein bars, as well as many many many other foods I love.

Graph of foods lactose intolerant people can't eat.

Foods I Had to Let Go, Or So I Thought

I had to give up pretty much all of these foods, until recently 😀 Now, protein bars, ice cream, sour cream, even milk, is back on the table for me.

Some people eat protein bars for weight loss, and if you choose the right one, you probably can lose weight by using protein bars as a meal replacement. I’ll admit, that is part of why I eat them, but mostly, they are quick and easy, which is ideal for me for breakfast and lunch. I only wish I had time to make them myself with one of the many protein bar recipes I found while searching for vegan protein bars. Homemade protein bars would probably be healthier, less fattening, and taste even better. But, I digress. The main reason I eat them is because I don’t even have time to make myself scrambled eggs for breakfast, so making protein bars myself is highly unlikely to happen.

what makes nuGo my favorite protein bar

First of all, NuGo Protein Bars are vegan, and given the lack of choices I have, I try every new one I find. Unfortunately many of the lactose free products out there taste, well, like they are lactose free 🤷🏻‍♀️ Although, I will say, they are getting better and better all the time, like finding a vegan bar I really really like and that is fulfilling enough to keep me satiated until lunchtime when I eat them for breakfast. Oh, and I’ve also found vegan protein powder, which is great for vegan smoothies 😋 You know something that has not gotten much better over the years, though? Vegan cheese 😝 But, I digress again, lol!

What makes NuGo my favorite protein bar? Here are a few reasons why:

  • To begin with, the first flavor I tasted was chocolate mint, one of my favorite flavors, and let me tell you, it tasted like a Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie, HELLO!

  • Second, I discovered they have more flavors than just chocolate mint and the others are all ALMOST as good 😃 There is Chocolate Pretzel, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, Chocolate Coconut (my least favorite, if i’m being honest), and Dark Mocha Chocolate. Obviously, all vegan chocolate, and I mean, who doesn’t love chocolate? Some people, but not many.

  • Third, thanks to Amazon, they are so easy to find. Before I found these protein bars on Amazon, It was hit and miss, finding them at the grocery store, and even if I did, it was usually only the mint chocolate that was there.

Best Tasting Protein Bars

I forgot to mention, NuGu also has Chocolate Almond protein bars. So many flavors to choose from, all so good (except coconut, I don’t really like that one. Have I mentioned that already, lol?

Have you tried the NuGu Protein Bars? Which flavor is your favorite? Do you know of an even better tasting lactose free protein bar?
